John W.
AIP Aficionado
Off-time pursuits: playing with trains, World-Cup soccer, channeling his inner Bill Bryson, chasing his 2 ½ year old around, enjoying happy hour in every city in North America
"Before I joined CopperLeaf I've always held positions that serviced the public, from banking to enterprise solutions for municipalities. I really enjoy client interaction, but the rigid structure of most organizations doesn't support relationships that cover a significant period of time so I couldn't measure my contribution. The exchanges were often quick and impersonal, which is something I really wanted to change in order to see the client benefits and how we were making a difference. CopperLeaf not only gives me the ability to do that, but it is growing at such a rate that it offers endless opportunities for growth.
When you make a choice to go to a growing company you want to check out not only the strength of the company and career growth potential, but also the strength and personality of their people. CopperLeaf believes in a work/life balance, and as the company and culture develops, so do we. We all have a part in truly shaping this organization and I love that.
Growing at 400% annually with an A-list clientele is a challenge, but the fact is that we have a really good time doing it. I think the state of the art Weber barbecue on the patio helps."
Mike M.
Senior Developer
Off-time pursuits: photography, mountain biking, online gaming, and buffing up to look great in his wedding tux.
"Before I joined CopperLeaf, I was developing applications for a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner within very short, fast-paced timelines. I worked long hours on top of a 3-hour commute, which was incredibly stressful and left no time for my family or me.
CopperLeaf offers me the work/life balance I've been looking for. Yeah, I could've gone to Redmond, but why? In my current job, the pace is totally different and I feel comfortable in my work environment. I can even telecommute, which saves me a huge amount of time on the road and gives me my personal life back. At CopperLeaf, I feel as though my individual needs are appreciated and taken seriously.
Although I'm a pretty recent hire, I can already see that I'm making a difference. I've helped upgrade our application framework to .Net 2.0, introduced unit testing, and recommended new procedures. I've also been able to teach my team-mates Microsoft coding standards and share my experiences developing to meet Microsoft best-practice standards and requirements."
A BCIT grad, Mike is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) with the Microsoft certifications.
Jody K.
Senior Consultant
Off-time pursuits: Mom of 3 (and part-time chauffeur), getting away from it all at the cottage, volunteering on several boards and committees, and supporting the annual Children?s Hospital telethon (nine years running).
"I left BC Hydro, where I'd been working with ESP since 2002, to join CopperLeaf. I believe in the product, have tremendous confidence in the ability of the leadership team, value the flexible work hours, and enjoy the new knowledge I'm gaining. My job involves a lot of variety: I work directly with clients, train new employees, write product documentation, provide customer support, and answer a lot of questions! Because I've worked with the product as a customer, I can provide valuable insight about the user experience. I've been in the client?s shoes and that makes a big difference in terms of trust.
Compared to other places I've worked, CopperLeaf is less political and pretty much ego- free. Everyone's opinions are valuable, information is shared broadly, and you have the ability to learn and/or make your job what you want it to be. With a small company it is sometimes hard to "fit" with the office atmosphere, but CopperLeaf is a great environment: welcoming and non-judgmental. I feel respected and I actually have the authority as well as the responsibility to do my job."
Jody is a Certified General Accountant (CGA).
John C.
Software Developer/Master of the Universe
Off-time pursuits: competitive badminton, volleyball, hockey, stock trading
My typical day involves developing new features and product enhancements, supporting the services team, and addressing bugs as they are identified in the QA process. I know that I'm making a difference through my work because I am involved in providing critical input on usability and improving the look and feel of the application interface.
CopperLeaf is a good fit for me because I can work flexible hours tackling challenging assignments for competitive pay in a great location. The company is still small enough that I can see the results of my work yet it's growing quickly and has a lot of potential. It's refreshing to work with a leadership team that is hands-on, passionate about the business, and continually looking for ways to improve the company. My co-workers are easy-going, approachable, and knowledgeable in their respective fields. It's easy for me to learn new things every day and that's what I need to get ahead.
John has a diploma in mechanical technology, a Bachelor of Commerce degree in information technology management with a minor in finance, and an associate certificate in Java programming (in the works).
